I have been pummeled by the stock market of late. But one stock which has not failed me and has been a bellwether of sorts is Compass Minerals, (CMP). In the last 12 months, this stock has yielded 85% including dividends. Earnings were up 64% in 2007 to 1.31 beating analysts’ estimates by 26 cents. What do they do? What do they make? The company is the second-largest salt producer in North America, (Goderich, Ontario.) This rock salt is used for de-icing roads during the winter season
Compass Minerals has been doing well in one sense because this winter has been one of the worst on record. Much of the US and the Midwest is a sheet of ice due to freezing temperatures and falling snow as the Motley Fool puts it.
So take that Al Gore! Don’t you just love it.
